Technical Information 7.62x39mm Magazines

Many ask three questions about our 7.62x39mm offerings:  Why didn't you use the AK-47 magazine?  Are the 7.62x39mm magazines you use reliable?  And where can these magazines be obtained?

The answers to the first question is that though the AK-47 magazines are relaible and plentiful, they are not well suited for rapid magazine changes.  Because the AK-47 magazine must toggle into place, it is easy to get a magazine inserted incorrectly so that it won't feed during a quick magazine change.   This is primarliy the reason we did not use the AK-47 magazine.

The second reason we don't use the AK-47 magazine is that it has no bolt hold open feature.  The best magazine design for rapid magazine changes is a magazine that goes straight in and out with a bolt hold open (bolt catch) feature.  Without the bolt catch, the action must be hand cycled after a magazine change which wastes valuable time in a competion or gunfight.

Are the 7.62x39mm magazine relaible?  They are absolutely reliable now.  When we began the 7.62x39mm rifle production, we exprerienced problems with the magazines.  The main problem was that the spring was not strong enough.  We found that using an unmodified AK-47 magazine spring in the magazines  could fix the problem.

The magazine manuacturer slowly increased the spring pressure and made some changes to the magazine body.  These fixes took a couple years  and were very frustrating for us and our customers.

A new company has taken over the manufacture of the magazines.  They work perfectly and they are readily availble.

Where can one get the magazines?  They can be had directly from Robinson Armament Co. or from Ammunition Storage Components (ASC, the manufacturer).
